Methodology:
 

We conducted a qualitative study through out the project period. In addition, the study will be conducted with the senior management of the university and 8 faculties, teachers, and students from all faculties. We planned to invite 2000 staffs and students to conduct an online survey about academic advising, We invited 30 to 45 meeting attendees to participate in personal, in-depth face-to-face interview. Besides, we arranged 4 meetings on campus.

Quantitative survey data was expressed with descriptive statistics.
Qualitative interview data was evaluated using the method of thematic coding.

We stratified the qualitative interview into the 5 aspects described below: 
(1) Arrangement, (2) Barriers, (3) Content, (4) Definition, and (5) Evaluation.

Quantitative data collection -Online Survey

Firstly, we used the online survey to reach out 2000 academic staff and students and collect their thoughts about Academic Advising in three stages (In each stage, we planned to collect 750 online surveys from the eight faculties).

Qualitative data collection -In-depth Interview

Secondly, we planned to invite 45-50 teachers and students to conduct in depth face-to-face or Zoom interview. Each interview will be around 45 to 60 minutes. Semi-structured interview questions were used to interview the teachers and students and the survey questions were shown below for reference.

Target participants: Full-time CUHK undergraduate & post-graduate students

  1. What do you think are the roles of academic advisor?

  2. How do you perceive your relationship with your advisor? (developmental vs prescriptive style of academic advising).

  3. What kind of difficulties and barriers are you facing in academic advising?

  4. Do you prefer online academic counselling or face-to-face counselling?

  5. What are the reasons that you meet with your academic advisors?

  6. What are your perceived outcomes from participating in the academic advising?

  7. In view of the current social movement and the spread of coronavirus, do you think CUHK or the academic advisors have provided students with enough support in the crisis? Please provide examples for enough support or not enough support.

  6. In view of the current social movement and the spread of coronavirus, do you think CUHK or the academic advisors have given students enough support in the crisis? Please provide examples for enough support or not enough support.
